From May of 2024, TikTok labels content as ‘AI Generated’ when it detects it. Is this allowed, and does AI Generated Content work on TikTok? This article focuses primarily on TikTok, but this largely goes the same for Reels or Shorts.
In short: YES, AI Generated Content is allowed on TikTok, and YES it works.
From their own policy:
“To support authentic and transparent experiences for our community, we encourage creators to label content that has been completely generated or significantly edited by AI. We consider content that's significantly edited by AI as that which uses real images/video as source material, but has been modified by AI beyond minor corrections or enhancements, including synthetic images/video in which… read the full policy here.”
Very simple: adult content and heavy political content, including ‘fake news’.
From their policy linked above, they say this:
“The following types of AI-generated content containing the likeness (visual or audio) of a real or fictional person aren't allowed, even if disclosed with the AI-generated content label, and may be removed:
A public figure when used for political or commercial endorsements. We define public figures as adults (18 years and older) with a significant public role, such as a government official, politician, business leader, or celebrity.
A private figure. We define private figures as any person who isn't a public figure, including people under 18 years old.
Hmm, so that last one is a bit tricky and seems very broad. Likely deliberately to give them the benefit of the doubt in case of any debate.
